PROCESS / THIS IS SINGLE

This-Is-Single-First-Drafts
Before I left for Europe, I busted my buns to finish all my freelance projects so I could blissfully enjoy my two-week vacation. While I'd like to give credit to my mad work skillz for accomplishing that, it was actually because I had awesome clients who gave pointed feedback + made designing for them super easy. Case in point : this project.

A popular food blogger came to me looking for a logo for a new venture she is starting. She was extremely focused in her vision—asking that the design be clean, simple and black + white to appeal to a wide audience. When I hear the words clean and simple, I immediately know the typography has to be extra strong in order to create a design that looks thoughtful + complete. To start, I played around with hand-lettering using ink + a brush ( seen in the first and last logos ), then ventured into Illustrator where I headed back to basics and played with shapes, rules and strong sans serif typefaces. The result is this collection of first round logo drafts.

It just so happens she picked TWO of these logos, which we tweaked to make them more cohesive so she can employ either one for her project. Now I am totally into designing simply : black + white, strong typography, minimal decoration. I believe it was Albert Einstein who said, "Make things as simple as possible, but not simpler."

Word up Einstein.

WORK / STEPHANIE + BRIAN

Ever since I took my first letterpress class nearly a year ago, I have wanted to letterpress a wedding invitation suite. Maybe it's the ( small amount of ) girly girl in me, but I'm borderline obsessed with all things wedding design. And I'm even more obsessed with wedding letterpress design. To me, there's nothing more beautiful than the tactile, rich texture of letterpress wedding invites arriving in the mailboxes of loved ones announcing the big day. *le swoon*

So...flash forward to this past February when I convinced my friend Steph to let me letterpress her wedding invites for a school project in my Advanced Letterpress class. Luckily, it only took a bottle of wine or two to get her drunk and agree ( it's why we're friends ).

My design was influenced by Steph's classic, effortless taste + neutral wedding color scheme. The two-color suite encompassed an invitation, postcard RSVP ( saved $$$ on envelopes! ), map of Madison for out-of-town guests + a mini information card of the day's events. I incorporated a vintage-inspired palette of champagne + charcoal as well as hand-lettered a custom script font, seen in the bride + groom's names, their monogram + on the map. For a finishing touch, we edge painted the sides charcoal gray to give an extra touch of sophistication.

The printing process took wayyyy longer than I thought, which can happen when you forget to include a digit in the phone number of the wedding hotel + have to reprint that piece. It also happens when you accidentally get your hair stuck in the printing press.

Needless to say, when I was done printing, I celebrated like this.

Then, I celebrated at Steph + Brian's wedding two weekends ago like this.

It's all for the love of letterpress, my friends.

*The suite was printed with a Vandercook SP15 press on Crane's Lettra, Flourescent White, 110C.

WAXWING

For someone who generally hasn't been graced with the best luck ( I blame Middle Child Syndrome ), I got real lucky this semester. In my Integrated Design class, our main assignment for the semester was an extensive branding project for a company we picked out of a hat. In this hat were a motley crew of possibilities—ranging from a taxidermy service to a chimney sweep business to a pet clothing + accessories store. After hearing my options, I was convinced with my luck I'd be spending the next three months figuring out how to make taxidermy look cool.

But then, in a stroke of blinding luck, I was handed my assignment: VEGAN CAFÉ.

Cue the happy dance + Hail Marys.

So, I spent nearly this entire last semester designing my dream restaurant—a clean, modern + cool eatery that happens to serve plant-based food in a ridiculously hip setting. The restaurant's name—Waxwing—was inspired by the bird of the same name. It's a fruit + plant-loving passerine bird that happens to reside year-round in the forests of the north, including Wisconsin. It provided the perfect inspiration for my project.

I wanted to brand the restaurant not as vegan, but rather a locally-minded hub for supporting farmers, growers and plant-based eats. A place you + your friends can hit up on a Friday night for good food + good drinks without the word "vegan" being an obstacle for enjoyment. With that, I steered away from the color green + any visible connotation to plants, roots, trees, etc. Instead, I designed more abstractly—utilizing gouache to paint the lilting, wispy logo and corresponding tree / feather icon utilized throughout the branding. I added touches of both yellow + red, since the actual waxwing bird has two small marking on its tail in those same colors.

The modernness of the branding was maintained through a grid structure ( seen in the matrix-like website, business card + info box on the menu ) and the addition of my current favorite font, Brandon Grotesque, along with Abraham Lincoln. All of these elements can be found in each of my collateral items, including the website ( iPad / iPhone version, included ), letterhead + envelope, business card, promotional buttons, dinner menu, drink menu + packaging. Seriously, check out my menu because it's off the chains delicious.

It took more than three months to finish this project, but I am really  happy with the results. Like I mentioned before, this semester I feel like I started to do work I was proud of, and this project was a big part of that. To further Waxwing, I want to design the interior of the restaurant, because I know exactly how I want it to look, huge plant wall included.

But for now, all I have to say is arrivederci, because in just FOUR days, this girl is heading to London + Italy for a long-awaited vacation.

See y'all in a couple weeks, my friends.
