School starts tomorrow, so I thought it only appropriate I finally wrap-up my work from last semester before the new one starts. And it just so happens that I saved one of my favorite projects for last.

I happen to love food ( hello! I write a blog about it ), so when my typography teacher gave us the assignment of designing our own restaurant logo + menu, I was ecstatic. To design menus for a living might just be my dream job. The one caveat was that we had to design the logo + menu in the style of a design movements. I chose Dada, which, as you can see from the top inspiration board, is a funky European avant-garde movement that started in the early 1900s as a rebellion against World War I.

Flicker Café is probably my dream restaurant. The menu, the type ( I used League Gothic + Marion ), the shapes and the simple yet quirky result. If I do use this piece in my portfolio however, I want to go back and refine the menu design to give it more richness and depth. In the logo, you can see that I used a light texture overlay which adds to the "flicker" of the design. The menu lacks that same texture, which is making it read a little flat to me. But otherwise, I love it all.

And that my friends, is an official wrap on spring semester.

Believe it or not...I am STILL posting school projects from spring semester. You all finally see what my mother + father have known for years: that my ability to procrastinate knows no limits. But I am really glad that I am finally posting about this REI catalog I designed for my Applied Computer Graphics class, because it's my favorite piece of work I did last semester.

It should really come as no surprise that I enjoyed this catalog project immensely. As the daughter of a magazine + Sunday ads whore (I mean that nicely mom) and logical, right-brained accountant (you too dad), my genetic make-up was clearly destined to design catalogs for the masses. The mix of product promotion and attention to detail seemed to fit me well. So much so, that instead of doing the required eight catalog pages, I did 16. And yes, obnoxious overachiever girl that everyone hates right here.

The result is a camping-themed REI mini-catalog that I think fits well with REI's existing brand and makes you want to run outside to enjoy some serious outdoor summer fun. Or is that just me?

Please tell me that it's not just me. Because if there's one thing to NOT procrastinate about, it's definitely enjoying summer (awesome REI gear + camping trips included) while it lasts.

EVP COFFEE IPHONE APP

I had naively high hopes of blogging my spring semester of graphic design projects in a super responsible, timely fashion. But here I am finally blogging from a pizza joint near my house, shoving BBQ chicken pizza in my mouth and guzzling coffee on July 2nd. My car died this morning, I leave for St. Louis in 30 minutes and the work I should be getting done, well...isn't.

That, my friends, is life.

But I am super excited to share this project I did for my Applied Computer Graphics class earlier this semester. We were tasked with designing an iPhone app for one of two local Madison businesses. This project required us to design an app and corresponding app website landing page that aligned with the company's mission, vision and overall branding.

Since I love coffee far more than I love working out, I chose EVP and started sketching out a clean, modern app with a heavy focus on icons. This was my first foray into icon design, but I really love the way my coffee icons turned out (especially the French press). For the project, we designed three pages of the entire iPhone app. I tried my best to utilize the icons as much as possible throughout those pages while mirroring their softness + simplicity in other design elements.

I am happy with the way it turned out and look forward to refining it for my final portfolio. But that can wait until later...because it's 4th of July weekend!

See you soon St. Louie.
