COLOR MEDIA

CM Collage

This semester, my least favorite class has been Color Media...by far.

You would think that I, as an obnoxious wearer of color, lover of color and colorer, would enjoy learning about color theory. And for the most part, I did. However, the projects in this class nearly caused me death by colored pencil. My daily mantra became an expletive laden variation of, "I wanna rip my hair out so - ugh! - get me a $*&^@#% drink if I have to put one more $*&^@#% Prismacolor to paper."

My annoying + ceaseless perfectionism did not make this class any easier. Even though I was majorly frustrated during most of the projects, which were often boring + repetitive, I could not bear to turn in half-assed work. That means I spent way more hours on these drawing projects than probably needed. But while this blog post has officially turned into a major rant (nothing personal professor), I have to admit these drawings are some of my favorite + rewarding work I've done recently.

Especially my tiger. RAWR.

Maybe Color Media wasn't the most exciting class of the semester, but it was a good brush-up on my drawing skills in addition to providing me a multitude of reasons to pop open a bottle of vino after class. In other words, I'm calling the whole semester in Color Media a wash.

P.S. Anyone looking to buy art? If so, I've got brightly-colored drawings calling your name...

Remember how I said the answer is always "yes?"

Well...it's the only thing that pushed me to say yes to my very first engagement photo session. Fear of hypocrisy can motivate you to do crazy things, let me tell you. I couldn't bear to have said those very words (much less have them published on the Internet) and not fully live up to them, so I nervously accepted my friend Lauren's request to take photos of her and her fiancee, Shawn.

We spent a frigid afternoon together in the throes of Wisconsin's longest winter ever and ended the shoot with beers and nachos at a local BBQ joint. It wasn't the perfect afternoon as far as engagement photo scenarios go (hello! it was 13 degrees), but it really didn't matter. Because I quickly learned photographing a couple isn't as much about you or your skills or your lack thereof, but more about being attentive. It was about finding those small details - the handholds, the side-glancing looks, the inside jokes - personal to Lauren + Shawn and trying my best to capture that love in the lens.

Lauren + Shawn's relationship is so natural - filled with laughter, snarky jokes and a respect for each other and good Wisconsin beer. Just how it should be. And hopefully my attentive watching skills and ever-evolving photography skills worked to do just that.

NPR + TATTLY

To know me is to know that I am a huge NPR geek. Just a month ago, I made my first contribution to public radio and felt totally mature while doing it. Afterwards, I came to the conclusion that donating to NPR is the surest sign you are officially a grown-up. A smart, in-the-know grown-up.

Anyways...how kick ass are these temporary tattoos? I saw them this morning and just HAD to share them with you. They are designed by Tattly, a company that makes "designy temporary tattoos" and is the genius idea of Swiss designer extraordinaire Tina Roth Eisenberg.

Last August, I had the chance to hear Tina speak at the Alt Summit in New York City, and she's (of course) totally inspiring and funny and one of those people you would probably hate if she wasn't just so dang rad. She has the most amazingly creative designers working for her, and these temporary tats are proof of how good and spot-on their eye for design is.

You can buy these kick-ass tattoos + see the entire collection here.
