GETTING INSPIRED

HA-Inspiration

Part of becoming a better designer ( slash a generally culturally-aware human being ) is to pay attention to the world. All of it.

As a person with a high level of anxiety, this often causes me great stress. Between school and work, it seems as though most days I am simply trying to remember to put on deodorant and turn off the oven before I leave my apartment for the day. It's true: I've forgotten to do both. And then Malaysian airplanes go and disappear and my WHOLE attention is focused on the fact that a plane literally disappeared from the sky with no one having any trace of its sadly doomed fate.

While its not beneficial to over consume news while hunched over your computer for hours on end ( trust me, if they ever find that flight, you WILL hear about it ), it can be helpful to glean inspiration from the work of the world.

Lately, I've been spending five to 10 minutes per day surfing Pinterest or blogs or random Google searching / stalking those who bring a fresh perspective to their creative work. Those who see things differently that I. It keeps me inspired and motivated and honestly, it's a small slice of me time on those days when I realize I'm wearing swimsuit bottoms and not real underwear.

Yep, that's happened too.

01  HAPPYOLKS : Lovely recipes, even lovelier writing. Kelsey is a gem of a person who reminds me to dig deeper, be better and love more fully.

02  EVA BLACK : Eva is my go-to for lettering inspiration. Whether its handmade in gouache or digital, her type is always spot-on beautiful.

03  ANDA MARIE : This photographer sees things others do not. Her eye for the world is completely soul-affirming. And best of all, I get to call her a friend.

04  ANAGRAMA : Sophisticated, eye-catching, modern + fun design. A branding intelligence group out of Mexico City that is killing it.

05  TINA SMITH : I discovered this newbie designer on Dribbble and was instantly inspired by her sweet lettering / type skills.

06  WES ANDERSON : Obvs, I saw The Grand Budapest Hotel, and it was amazing. The visuals he creates are absolutely one of a kind.

07  INTO MIND : This minimalist clothing blog is an inspiring resource for developing personal style + living a more simplistic life.

08  BIRD IS THE WORD : Another blog that pairs gorgeous recipes with even more gorgeous writing. I want to be Kali's friend.

As I mentioned, one of my favorite classes last semester was Graphic Design. It was an exploratory semester of a range of design concepts - from surface pattern design to iconography to concepting layout design. But the biggest project of the semester was a brand redesign for a local company in need of...how shall we say it?...design rehab.

I hate to say it, but my favorite neighborhood bakery needs help. Batch Bakehouse has the BEST sundried tomato + rosemary sourdough pretzels, gruyére croissants, scali bread - you name it, I've eaten it. Their brand is something of markedly less desire ( see their current logo here ). The royal blue / light blue color scheme is forgettable along with its clunky logo and plain typography. For an artisanal bakery crafting food from scratch with local ingredients, they deserve better!

In redesigning Batch's logo, I wanted to balance the vintage and the modern to reflect their classic approach and forward-thinking East side location. Chocolate brown + light blue has always been a favorite of mine, so I tweaked the color scheme to incorporate their dusty blue color but with a new twist. Since Batch makes everything by hand, I crafted handmade type which can be seen in the logo, on the business card and bread marker. The small wheat mark is a classic symbol that I repurposed for the now by simplifying it to its most basic elements.

The overall look ( I hope! ) is clean and modern, with a little bit of quirk + handmade flair. I think this project has a good chance of making it into my portfolio, so I am already brainstorming how to expand it further. To start, I want to make an entire font out of that handmade type.

For now though, I'm off to go buy that sundried tomato + rosemary pretzel. This project has made me exceedingly hungry.

ESSENTIALS: SUMMER MINIMALISM

Essentials_New-Closet-Items

If you live in the Midwest ( or really, any state that's not touching Mexico or bordering the Gulf of Mexico ), chances are you're complaining about the weather as you read this. I think we're all over this winter / spring of brutal cold + polar vortexes. Mother nature can totally suck it.

If we're practicing optimism however, the frigid temperatures have given me the perfect reason to rationalize summer shopping. I know I said I was trying to reduce my closet, and the good news is I am. It's just that my haphazard wardrobe was completely devoid of good summer basics, so I spent hours and hours scouring the internet for solid summer pieces from the warmth + coziness of my tiny studio apartment. Why willingly go outside when you can shop WHILE wearing flannel pajama pants + slippers? No brainer.

This nine-square collection is my official summer 2014 purchases. A nice, thick striped tee. A few basic tank tops. Slim-fit boyfriend jeans in a light wash. A summery chambray dress. A lightweight gray sweater. A basic navy blue skirt scored on major sale. Comfy nude heels. An effing amazing one-piece swimsuit*. Pink + leopard sunnies. I already have a few basic tees from Everlane, pairs of shorts + sandals, so all I need now is a big bottle of SPF + gigantic margarita in my hand.

Bring it on summer, if you ever choose to come.

*Way too expensive, purchased after one too many glasses of wine...oops!
